Charles Dickens (February 7, 1812 - June 9, 1870) was born in Landport, Portsea, England. He is regarded by many as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. A British writer and a social critic, Charles Dickens was considered a literary genius who created some of the world's best-known fictional characters. The second of eight children of a family continually plagued by debt, the young Dickens came to know not only hunger and privation, but also the horror of the infamous debtors’ prison and the evils of child labor.
