Linguistic

We live in a world where most of the people out there love being judgmental. It’s not that they analyse the situation or get deep into it to find the truth or something, it’s just that they do this because they believe some stereotypes and they think that all the things and people around them should be according to the stereotypes they have created. And eventually without realizing it, they cultivate a habit of judging people, mostly on the appearance of other people, how they dress and how they speak. It’s really absurd and unreasonable to find several people judging others based on how they speak English language. Why is it so that if you don’t know English language you’re uneducated or not a sophisticated person? I believe, to know how to speak English is really important in this generation and developing nation, but it holds least importance whether you know a particular language or not to become successful. I’ve never seen someone who’s unsuccessful because he didn’t know English language. I myself have studied in Gujarati medium. And it really doesn’t make any difference to what I do today, because of the language I speak. Talking about being judgmental, I would want to share an incident which happened to me a couple of days ago. So I was on my way to home in an elevator and there is this girl standing beside me who asked me from where did I graduate? And I told her that it was that particular college (which was not an English medium college).

She got amazed and stared at me for like 10 seconds and what she said next made me write this article. She said that I didn’t look like a Gujarati medium girl (read as: my appearance was not as a Gujarati medium girl should have). It made me think and most of all I pitied that girl’s ideology. How can people judge so easily? Why language is associated with how you look or how your personality is? All these questions popped in my head and I was forced to give it a thought and make a conclusion. English has become so much important these days that people judge our capabilities based on how well we speak in English or dress like Western people do. I am facing this dilemma till date. I am a proud Gujarati and a proud citizen of this nation. I respect the importance of English language today but I don’t tend to forget my mother tongue. I don’t think there is any need to express ones love and affection in any particular language. Love, friendship and knowledge do not have any language.
Kindness does not have any language so I would give a small but unavoidable advise that don’t judge people based on how good their English is or how western they dress, try to know the person’s personality and its nature. With this I also want to add that I do respect English language and even accept it as an international language but I love my language. All languages hold same importance so do not make any language so superior that other languages get inferior. So love your mother tongue! Don’t let English be a barrier in your success.
