On My Way Back

There was a man in his early thirties. His name was Alex. He was a fair skinned guy. Though his height was on the short side, he had a well built body. He was a software engineer working in a multinational company. He was happily married and had a couple of children. Once walking back from his office, he found a bag lying on the road. The bag was of silver color and looked quite precious. The bag looked so good that he was tempted towards it. Just when he was about to reach for the bag, a dog out of nowhere came and picked the bag in its mouth and ran towards the forest. He liked the bag so much and hence without getting a second thought, he ran behind the dog to the forest.

Reaching the forest and observing its greenery and listening the melodious chirping of the birds with the gentle cold wind hitting his face he thought of relaxing for a while in the awesome atmosphere of the forest. But just then he realized about that precious bag and started running after the dog. “On my way back, I’ll definitely relax here for a while” he thought.

The dog ran through the forest and stopped near the river. He thought that he might get the bag now. But just when he reached near the dog, the dog jumped in the river with the bag in its mouth and started swimming to the opposite shore of the river. He too jumped in the river and swam towards the shore. The cold water of the river, relaxed him. He chilled there until the thought of the bag came into his mind. He again started swimming. While swimming he told himself that, “On my way back, I’ll definitely relax here for a while”

There was a mountain on the opposite shore and the dog ran to the mountain. He too started climbing the mountain after the dog. There was a cave in the middle of the mountain and the dog ran inside it. He too reached near the cave, but looking back from the mountain he was dumbstruck. He just couldn’t believe his eyes, the view of the city and the forest to the river flowing was just incredible. He just stood there in awe. But suddenly he realized about the bag. And he spoke, “On my way back, I’ll definitely relax here for a while” maybe he was talking to himself or maybe to the creator of this scenic beauty. He entered the cave and looked here and there but couldn’t find the dog anywhere. But he found the bag and started running towards it. He was just so excited to open the bag and look what his hard work and his luck has gained him. He opened the bag which was full of silver coins. He was happy with his achievement, but not completely satisfied and hence started looking for something more. Just then he saw something on the opposite side of the cave.

He saw something shining in one of the openings in the cave. Without getting any second thought, he went in the opening to have a look at the shining object. A golden object was half buried in the ground. He bent down and started removing the earth to acquire that golden object. The object was a golden biscuit. He took the object in his hands just to realize that still some other thing was shining inside the dug ground. He started digging more. The more he dug, the more he found the shining gold biscuits. But after digging to some feet he stopped and decided to leave with whatever amount of biscuits he had found. He collected all the biscuits and put it in his bag and started towards one of the sides of the dug hole.

While walking towards a side in the hole his foot fell on something conical. He stood there to check what that cone thing was. He was amazed by what he had seen. The conical object was nothing but a diamond. He was very happy as he has just found a treasure. So without wasting a minute he again started digging the ground this time for the precious diamonds. He kept digging more and more feet in sheer excitement of finding the treasure. But he forgot that he soon has to climb back the same amount as the amount he had dug. And the hole he had dug was not a small one it was approximately 6 to 8 feet deep. But still he was insanely digging for getting more and more diamonds. In no time he had reached ten feet deep in the ground. And now it had become almost impossible for him to get out of that hole. He sooner realized this and started regretting for the blunder he has created just to fulfil his stupid greed. While digging he thought that he was digging to live life happily after it, but soon he realized that he wasn’t modeling a happy life, but instead he was digging his own grave.

The first bag he saw and which he desperately wanted to achieve was his dream, but the other objects he had found in the cave where his greed. He soon realized his mistake of choosing materialistic happiness over real happiness. Real happiness were the ones which he had found while chasing the dog for that suitcase. The serene atmosphere of the forest, the warm water of the river which had relaxed his soul and the incredible view he saw from the edge of the mountain which had soothed his eyes. This where the real happiness, not the bag full of golden biscuits or the diamonds he had. Real happiness leads to a satisfied life whereas materialistic happiness only leads to satisfied moments.

Being greedy to achieve a dream is a good thing, but being satisfied after achieving it is the best thing.

The balance between being greedy and being satisfied is the secret of happy life.
