Khwaja Abdul Hameed and Cipla

Many of us think that world superpower America doesn't have Hydroxychloroquine but India has it. How is it possible? For finding answer we have to go in the year 1924 that is independence period. A boy from government job family was going out to a foreign to become a barrister. His father had dreamt of sending him to England so he collected money for the same, but a boy had an interest in Chemistry. His father dropped him in a ship but these smart boy changed that ship and reached to Germany. That rebellious boy's name was Khwaja Abdul Hameed that is K. A. Hameed. During that period Germany was the top most in chemical industries. The best education and research among whole world was there. K. A. Hameed took admission in Humboldt university of Berlin, Germany. He got highest degree in pharmaceuticals. During this period he fell in love with a girl there. Both got married. She was a Jeu and had Communist thoughts, but in this period there was emerging of Hitler.Hitler being a protestant dynasty had a great anger against Jeu and Communist people. Slowly Hitler captured the power of Germany and started destroying Jues.

                       K. A. Hameed succeeded in the escape from Germany to India with his wife and children, but father-in-law and mother-in-law became a victim of Nazi persecution.

K.A. Hameed was trying to establish a pharmaceutical company in India. He founded a pharmaceutical company with the help of his wife, it is Chemical Industrial Pharmaceutical Laboratory that is Cipla.Foundation of Cipla was in the year 1935 and its investment was 200000 rupees. He started producing medicines within two years by establishing a factory.

That time India had village medicines only.During that period Cipla started producing  advanced medicines

Worldwide.

                   K. A. Hameed was not only a pharmacy scholar in India but also in whole World. Many universities were calling him as a guest lecturer for guiding students. He was the member of Mumbai university, Aligarh Muslim university and Royal chemical society of England.

He was close to freedom fight of India. He used to consider Mahatma Gandhi as his teacher. He had sentenced to jail when he was in a college because of participation in a non cooperative movement.

K.A. Hameed used to take precaution that instead of his profit, common man should get his medicines because of impact of Mahatma Gandhi.

Mahatma Gandhi once had visited his factory. Many times Muslim League tried to change his mind, but K.A. Hameed was disliking religious politics and he rejected Muhammad Ali Jinnah's proposal. For this reason he didn't go to Pakistan after dividation but helped to build a new nation by staying in India.

He tried to establish NCL( National Chemical Laboratory) at Pune for the fundamental research in Chemistry at National level.he also established CSIR (Council of Scientific and Industrial Research). His heritage was continued by his son Yusuf Hameed. He is a Ph.D. holder in Chemistry from Cambridge university. At early age he got the responsibility of Cipla. His father had told formula for running a company that," We should use our products  not to rob common people but to cure them. Remember this forever."

During that period ICI (Imperial Chemical Industries) a British Chemical company from Britain produced Propranolol medicine on high BP (blood pressure). It was very expensive and cannot be afforded by common Indians. Then after study Yusuf came to know that it can be produced by using low costs.Afterwards he produced this medicine by reverse engineering and started its production in Cipla.

Foreign Pharma companies after knowing this tried to bring pressure on Indian government under the patent law. That time PM Indira Gandhi called Yusuf Hameed for a meeting.Yusuf being 34 years old clearly told her that," it is the right of crores of Indians to get this medicine to save their life and profit earning companies cannot take it."Indira Gandhi got this point. Then she rejected Britain's pressure and brought the patent law 1970 in  Indian parliament.By this law patents on production of medicines and chemicals cancelled allowing processing patents only. Provision of compulsory licence permitted.By this effect we Indians get medicines in one-fourth charges as compared to other Pharma companies in the World.Further because of globalisation Indian Government changed the patent law. That time because of Indira Gandhi's brave decision not only Cipla but also all Pharma companies benefited. Thus, medicine industries stood vigorously in India. Therefore nowadays still we don't depend upon other countries for medicines and even America begged to India for the same.Nowadays still Cipla provides medicines to poor countries in the world for AIDS disease in a low price.

all beneficiary Pharma companies in the world All beneficiary Pharma companies in the World consider him an antagonist, but for each and every patient Yusuf Hameed is the Modern Robinhood. He has been awarded with Padma Bhushan by our Indianndian Government while United Nations has placed him on the board of Health and Technology by taking note of his work.

Now in this Corona pandemic Remdesivir produced by Cipla is life giving medicine for patients. The price of it was rupees 28000 before 1 year. Now it is available for rupees 500 by Cipla company.
