A Rainbow Fairy Tale

It all began on a beautiful full moon night. The big fat round white moon was shining in the sky like a sparkling silver dish and the earth was shimmering with its soft silver light. Everything looked just beautiful. All the fairies in fairyland were absolutely spellbound by the beauty of the earth.

The fairies decided, “Let us all go and visit the earth today.”

On that moonlit night when all the people on earth were sound asleep the fairies of the Fairyland travelled down to earth soundlessly. The sweet smelling lovely white flowers shook their head in glee and welcomed the fairies.

The dew drops sparkled with joy on the grass and the fireflies looked like they were playing hide and seek as they lit up and turned off their lights together. The fairies were delighted to see all this and began dancing in tune with the happiness all around them.

Among the fairies was a little fairy, her name was Jhilmil. Now Jhilmil was very young-just a little girl really. She could not stay awake late at night and fell asleep quite early. While the other fairies were having fun dancing Jhilmil’s eyelids started drooping. She crept behind a bush under a Magnolia tree and promptly fell asleep.

The other fairies who were busy dancing never noticed when Jhilmil had stopped dancing and fallen asleep. Suddenly a dark cloud floated out into the sky and hid the moon. Everything on earth that had looked enchanting a moment ago looked dark now. The fairies got scared and ran back to fairyland. In their hurry they did not even notice that Jhilmil was missing. She was left sleeping all alone under the magnolia blossoms. Only a little bunny with very long ears came out of the bush and watched over her all night long.

The sunflowers were the first to wake up in the morning. They saw the sleeping form of Jhilmil and said, “Jhilmil, the sun is out, it is time to get up!”

Their voices woke the little fairy. She sat up and rubbed her eyes, “Oh! It is morning already? Why didn’t someone wake me up?”

All the trees around her shook their heads and said, “Your friends have all gone back to the fairy land. You are left alone on earth”.

Jhilmil burst into tears – she was all alone in a place where she did not know anyone.

“What will I do? How will I go back now? No-one from the fairyland can come to the earth during the daytime, I am stuck here” sobbed Jhilmil.

“Don’t worry, Jhilmil,” a little purple wild flower swayed in breeze and said, “Stay with us for today. We will all love you and take care of you”.

Jhilmil was very happy hear those words. She forgot her tears and said,” That is a wonderful idea! I am going to stay here today. I always wanted to make friends with the little kids on earth. I am sure someone from the fairyland will come back to look for me at night”.

The little fairy made her way towards the city. She was thinking about her parents and how sad they must be without her. They were probably waiting for night to fall so that they could look for her.

Suddenly she heard someone call, “Jhilmil!”

She turned and looked. It was a cute little puppy!

Jhilmil, my name is Snowball,” the puppy said, “Please come to our house. Today is my little mistress’ birthday. All her friends are going to be there in the evening and she is going to cut the cake. You must come.”

Jhilmil said, “I will be there in the evening when the party begins, I will look silly if I go there now! Let me look around little bit until then.”

Snowball said, “Alright, that sounds like a good plan. We live in that white house over there. Don’t forget to come.”

“Okay little puppy Snowball, I will see you in the evening,” said Jhilmil, then she took a turn to the right and walked and walked.

After a little while Jhilmil saw a little girl standing near a well and crying her eyes out.

“What is wrong? Why are you crying?” Jhilmil asked her.

The little girl sobbed and said, “My little kitty fell down into the well and cannot come out.”

“Is that all? Don’t cry. I will get your cat back for you in a moment.”

Jhilmil held her magic wand over the well and out jumped a white fluffy bundle from the well.

The girl hugged the kitten and said, “My name is Maria. You seem to be a very nice girl, you saved my kitty. But who are you? I don’t think I have seen you before.”

“My name is Jhilmil and I have lost my way home.”

“Don’t worry Jhilmil, I will pray to Lord Jesus for you so that you can find your way home quickly,” Maria said with a sweet smile.

Jhilmil said thank you and goodbye to Maria and kept walking. A little further down the road from her was a little boy.

Suddenly a man appeared out of an alley way, snatched something out of the boy’s hand and ran the other way.

The boy immediately started shouting, “Stop, thief! He took my bag – someone please stop him!”

Jhilmil waved her wand towards the man who was running away and a bag flew out of his hand straight into Jhilmil’s.

The thief looked absolutely astonished. He got scared and ran with twice the speed into the alley he had come from.

Jhilmil gave the boy his bag.

“Lots of thanks to you! The bag has money for my examination fees. I have to pay them at school today. My name is Mohsin, what’s yours?”

“I am Jhilmil from the land of the fairies, but I am lost.”

“Oh you poor thing! Don’t worry I will pray to Allah that you get home soon,” said Mohsin.

“Thank you, Mohsin!” said Jhilmil and was on her way again.

Jhilmil could see a little boy flying a kite on a rooftop. Jhilmil had never seen a kite before. She loved the brightly coloured thing floating gracefully in the sky. Suddenly the string snapped and kite started to drift away from the boy. He tried to grab the end of the string, lost his balance and fell off the edge of the roof!

“Oh no! If he falls on to the ground he will really get hurt!” thought Jhilmil and quickly waved her wand.

The little boy landed on the ground straight on his feet!

“My name is Mohinder. You saved my life today! I will remember you all my life.”

“I am Jhilmil. I came from the fairyland but I am lost now and cannot go back.”

“You are such a nice girl! I will pray for you to the Guru in the Gurudwara and I am sure you will find your way home soon.”

“That will be very nice, but remember never to jump from the roof like that for a kite. You could have gotten hurt really badly and it would have been really painful!”

Jhilmil bid Mohinder goodbye and went on her way.

The little fairy from the land of the fairies went all over the streets of the city and helped many little children of the earth. She was rather surprised to see the huge buildings and the double decker buses. They did not have cars in Fairyland. There if you wanted to go somewhere you just flapped your wings and flew!

In the evening Jhilmil went to the house of the little puppy Snowball, who had invited her. The house was full of little children. Snowball was full of importance and said, “Jhilmil, come with me quickly before I get too busy! Let me introduce you to my little owner.”

Snowball jumped on his stubby little legs and took her inside the house.

Jhilmil followed the fluffy Snowball into a big room. Lots of kids were already sitting there.

“Hey Jhilmil! What are you doing here?” someone said from among them.

Jhilmil looked and saw Maria smiling at her.

“What fun! Maria, Mohsin, Mohinder! What are all of you doing here?” Jhilmil was pleasantly surprised.

“Don’t you know today is our friend Rani’s birthday. Come let us introduce you to her,” they all said together. And they all took Jhilmil to meet Rani.

“Rani, this is Jhilmil. She helped us all today but she has lost her way home and cannot go back.”

Rani took Jhilmil’s hand in hers and said, “I am so glad you could come to my birthday party. I will pray to god that you can get home safely.”

“Thank you, Rani. I am really happy to be your friend.  I want to give you a gift for your birthday.”

Jhilmil took off her ring from her finger and gave it to Rani.

“This is a magic ring. If you put it on you finger and make a wish  your wish will come true!”

“Thank you so very much Jhilmil for the wonderful gift!”

Then Rani cut the cake and everyone got a piece. They laughed and sang and played a lot of games. They ate the lovely food prepared by Rani’s mother. Jhilmil was very charmed with everything. They never had birthday parties in Fairyland. Rani gave her lots of balloons and a colourful hat to wear.

After a while Jhilmil said, “I really must to go now and try to find a way back. My parents must be very worried about me.”

“You must come and see us again Jhilmil,” all of Rani’s friends said as they came to wish Jhilmil goodbye.

“I will never forget you!” said Jhilmil with tears in her eyes.

There was still light outside when Jhilmil walked out of Rani’s house. Suddenly a few pitter patter drops of rain started falling. Jhilmil kept walking in the rain. Tiny drops of rain began to wet her little wings and dress.

Suddenly someone said, “Jhilmil come and stand under me. You will fall sick if you stay out there and get wet.”

The little fairy looked up and saw a giant mushroom waving its head at her. She ran took shelter under the colourful toadstool.

The rain stopped as suddenly as it had appeared and the brilliant rays of the sun peeked out from under the clouds. Jhilmil came out from under the toadstool and saw that a stairway coloured in seven colours had come down all the way from the sky.

Jhilmil stood staring at the stairway in surprise! She had never seen anything so beautiful like it before.

As she looked she heard it say, “Jhilmil I am the rainbow! Come with me, I will take you back to the Fairyland.”

“How wonderful! You are so pretty so why have I never seen you before?” Jhilmil spoke with joy.

“I often come down to the earth but since you have not been here before you have never seen me. I am here to take you back home today.”

Jhilmil hopped, skipped, jumped and started climbing the rainbow.

All the flowers on earth waved their heads in goodbye.

“Goodbye Jhilmil, come again whenever you like.”

Jhilmil kept climbing the rainbow stairwell till it took her to her home in fairyland. She was delighted to see all family and friends.

But soon she remembered her friends on earth. Jhilmil kept thinking that the earth was a more fun place to be in than even the fairyland and her new friends there were all so nice!

Safe in her own home in the fairyland in the warmth of her mother’s embrace Jhilmil still missed her friends on earth.
