What are Verbs?

Verbs: The Words that show Action or State or Condition of any noun...

 

Verbs are usually positioned after the nouns or doers; however, one can change the perception.

 

The bold words are verbs. Verbs show action or state or condition:

 

Examples:

 

•  I explain language.

•  They understand the concept.

•  Meera is happy.

•  Mohan was unhappy.

•  That child needs something.

•  He understands everything.

•  We have courage to fight any enemy.

 

2.  Forms/ Types of Verbs:

 

     1.      Finite

        a.      Action verbs       ( Dynamic Verbs)

        b.     State verbs          ( Stative Verbs)

     2.      Non finite

        a.      Infinitive

        b.     Gerund

        c.      Participle

                i.      Perfect Participle

                ii.     Present Participle

     3.      Transitive/ Intransitive

               a.      Active verbs

               b.     Passive Verbs

     4.      Regular verbs

     5.      Irregular Verbs

     6.      Auxiliary verbs

     7.      Modals

 

3.  Some examples of action and state verbs:

 

An action means something happens or is happening, something changes or is changing. Action verbs can be converted to –ing form:

A state means something is staying at the same state. These verbs are state verbs: State verbs, usually, are not converted to –ing form.
