An Incidence In My Life

Few things in life happens which can't be forgotten for long. One such incidence in my life happened while we were travelling with family in Sikkim. We were in a quite a distant village named Pelling. It was a beautiful village full of natural scenic landscapes. We were enjoying our stay over there and at the night, suddenly came the news that due to demonetization, the older 500 and 1000 notes wouldn't be valid from the moment. My father and us ran to the ATM, as it came to our mind that the 500 and 1000 notes which were with us, wouldn't be working to buy things now and only option was to collect few notes of 100 rupees from the ATM.

As we reached there, we came to know that there were many other tourists too rushing towards the ATM. As I mentioned earlier, it was a small village and there was only one ATM in it. Thankfully, we were few of the early birds and we managed to collect few 100 Rs notes. We left the ATM as we knew other tourists too would be having the same problem and they should also get few 100 Rs. notes.

With the notes we collected, we managed to stay, eat and travel to our next stop which was Gangtok. Here, we expected the M G Road shop keepers to have card swiping machines, but that was not the case. Thankfully, the hotel booking apps like GoIbibo came to our help and we were able to pay hotel bills through plastic money. But we had to compulsively eat in the hotel only, so that we could pay those bills also via debit card.

More problems came at the next stop which was Siliguri. Here each ATM had 8 hour waiting queues. Each banks in the banking hour had the same problem. Many of the shop holders didn't have the card swiping machines and above all, in all these hazzles, we missed our train back to Kutch. We had 2nd AC reservation in that train, but we had no means to reach next station without the hard cash and taxies denied rushing the train to next station without the valid cash. We convinced them a lot to accept through card or by netbanking, but in vain. We had to stay for 2 more days, until we got the reservation again through Tatkaal Booking.

The tickets we got was of non AC sleeper, and it was a whole 66 hours journey. Though, those 2 extra days we got, we went to the city's few good posh food outlets, which accepted cards and stayed at good hotels through hotel booking apps. The return journey, though a bit uncomfortable and long, but we were too happy that finally we were getting home and was out of the queues of banks and ATMs.

We also learned few good lessons of life there by many helping local people and few uncomfortable stays and journey. But as we all were together, we finished our journey laughing and enjoying it with the full throttle.
