Chapter 1 A Narrow Escape

Krish did not learn to go to school following his elders. Rather he developed a type of phobia regarding schools listening their experiences or stories. He learnt from them that teachers were dangerous creatures who invested their brain in inventing new styles of punishment.

He had a cousin of his age who not only made the habit of going to school but also learnt reading and writing too, though his name was not registered as his age yet to be fit for school going. He earned name and fame but his popularity failed to draw Krish towards schools. His behaviour astonished his elders.

One fine morning, his elder brothers were getting ready for schools, he too was asked by his Granny to take an early bath.

After lunch Granny asked him to go to school with his Cousin which he instantly denied. Waiting for him, the cousin lost his patience and set out for school alone. Krish left a sigh of relief.

After that Granny tried to convince him but in vain until she agreed to go to school along with him. He knew very well that no teacher would dare to punish him in her presence.

She escorted him upto his class room. Krish received a warm welcome from the teacher. In spite of that he was not fully assured and nagged his Granny to go inside the class and remained seated with him.

He observed his class room keenly. It was a mud made straw shaded hut with a small veranda facing the main road of the village. It had three windows, all without frame or grills which could be used as emergency exit.

The idea injected oxygen in his heart. He got more oxygen as he found his Granny sitting with her friend and probably waiting for him on the opposite veranda of the school.

The class activity resumed as it was stopped due to Krish’s reluctant arrival. One boy showed his writing. He was appreciated, then the other. His fear about school was going to be vanished gradually.

But alas! Suddenly the teacher's stick became active as a boy forgot to bring his slate and another his pencil and on top of that Krish discovered his Granny missing, probably she left for home feeling relaxed. While other boys were caned, Krish cried loudly and ran out from class.

Krish was not sure whether he escaped through window or door. It’s a mystery.
