Sukumar Ruj is phenomenally a conspicuous storyteller of this contemporary era in the arena of Bengali literature. His fond and loving readers have been well acquainted with his creation for decades. The readers, in fact, require no introduction or acquaintance or initiation that his series of events which eventually build the stories bricks by bricks rise up, at ease, from the essence of the rural society and the citizen lives as well. For, on the one hand, he, who was born and bred amongst the life of countryside and amid Nature, is a perfectionist at his own fingertips, and, on the other hand, owing to a long spell of living in urban areas, he has been profoundly involved among the complexity of city life as well as the life made of sobs, sniffles, and smiles, with sniffles predominating. As a result, the readers enjoy the insight of the raw earth along with the fragrance of the country flowers from his narratives. Similarly, they hear the cries of anguish, despair, relief, surprise and terror from them. That apart, the principal essence of his stories, novella and novels is of various kinds of crisis of relationship, love and lamentation, degradation of moral values, social crisis in consequence of political highhandedness and so on.
