In 1569, Cervantes was forced to leave Spain and moved to Rome, where he worked in the household of a cardinal. In 1570, he enlisted in a Spanish Navy infantry regiment, and was badly wounded at the Battle of Lepanto in October 1571. He served as a soldier until 1575, when he was captured by Barbary pirates; after five years in captivity, he was ransomed, and returned to Madrid.
Book Summary
Novelas ejemplares (Exemplary Novels) is a series of twelve novellas that follow the model established in Italy, written by Miguel de Cervantes between 1590 and 1612.
The novellas are usually grouped into two series: those characterized by an idealized nature and those of a realistic nature. However, the separation between the two groups is not sharp and elements of the idealistic may be found in some of the realistic novels.
Since there are multiple versions of two of these stories, it is believed that Cervantes introduced some variations in these novels for moral, social and aesthetic purposes (hence the name 'exemplary').
