Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche (15 October 1844 – 25 August 1900) was a German philosopher, cultural critic, composer, poet, and philologist whose work has exerted a profound influence on modern intellectual history. He began his career as a classical philologist before turning to philosophy. He became the youngest person ever to hold the Chair of Classical Philology at the University of Basel in 1869 at the age of 24. In "David Strauss: the Confessor and the Writer," Nietzsche criticizes David Strauss's "The Old and the New Faith" as a vulgar reading of history in service of a degenerate culture. "On the Use and Abuse of History for Life" offers an alternative way of reading history, emphasizing the primary concern of living life, rather than knowledge for its own sake. "Schopenhauer as Educator" describes how Schopenhauer's individualism, honesty, and steadfastness could bring on a resurgence of German culture. In "Richard Wagner in Bayreuth," Nietzsche investigates the music, drama, and personality of Richard Wagner. The essays combine elements of Nietzsche's early naivete and later polemical style, and represent some of his most humorous work.
