Book Summary
The story takes place in a world where air travel has become commonplace and people are pushing the limits of what is possible. The main characters, Lucian Jeter and Tema Eyer, are scientists and pilots who are attempting to be the first to reach the stratosphere above fifty-five thousand feet. The story starts at Roosevelt Field, where many great flights have begun and ended. Jeter and Eyer are disappointed that another pilot, Franz Kress, has beaten them to the milestone of being the first to reach the stratosphere. However, they are also sportsmen and scientists and do not wish for Kress to fail. They hope that they will have a chance to succeed and receive the plaudits of the world. As the story progresses, Jeter and Eyer make modifications to their aircraft and finally achieve their goal of reaching the stratosphere. However, they find that the experience is not what they expected, and they must struggle to survive and return to the ground.
